Join the Global Liver Institute in raising awareness about nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and fatty liver disease

What is International NASH Day?

International NASH Day (NASH Day) is a public education campaign launched in June 2018 to raise visibility and urgency around fatty liver disease and its more advanced form, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which affects more than 115 million people around the world.

NASH is a hidden epidemic. It is the progressive form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and affects more than 115 million people worldwide. An estimated 357 million people will be affected by 2030. Because NASH symptoms are often not overt, NASH is often underdiagnosed and underreported. NAFLD and NASH are major risk factors for concurrent conditions: more than 70% of patients are living with obesity, up to 75% have type 2 diabetes, and anywhere from 20-80% have hyperlipidemia. Unchecked, NASH may lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver transplant.

Against this backdrop, the first International NASH Day was launched on June 12, 2018, with the goal of raising awareness about NASH and the actions people can take to prevent the disease. Under the leadership of GLI, #NASHday 2022 was celebrated on June 9, attracting over 70 partners from more than 70 countries, receiving endorsements from 22 international societies, and successfully launching events, liver health screenings, briefings, media outreach, and social media campaigns worldwide. Now entering its sixth year, we invite you to step up for patients, step up for early detection, step up for advocacy, #StepUpforNASH.

June 8, 2023 Educational Panels

International NASH Day convenes physicians, advocates, and other experts to share the latest insights on how to prevent, diagnose, and manage fatty liver disease. An informed worldwide community is essential to reduce the global prevalence of fatty liver disease, which can advance dangerously if left undetected and unacknowledged. Patients, caregivers, medical providers, policymakers, and all other advocates will learn actionable ways to support patients already diagnosed with NASH and to seek methods of risk reduction.

2023 Panels:

  • State of NASH: Putting All the Steps in Place

  • Exploring the Impact of NASH on High-Risk Populations

  • Leveling the Playing Field: Ensuring Access to NASH Treatments in Black Patients (Guest panel hosted by Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists)

  • Pathway to Liver Health: A Conversation with Arizona Liver Health

 What’s NASH

In preparation for International NASH Day, Global Liver Institute and Andrea Ventura went out on the streets of Washington D.C. to understand how much the average person knows about NASH. The 2-minute video compilation of street interviews included questions such as “Have you ever heard of fatty liver disease” or “Have you ever heard of NASH”. While it is estimated that every 1 in 4 people may have fatty liver disease, results from the street interviews indicated an apparent need to increase awareness of NAFLD and NASH within our communities.

Check out our Inter(NASH)ional Recipe Book!

In order to educate the general public and the global liver community on the importance of a healthful diet in the prevention and management of NAFLD/NASH, GLI coordinated a large-scale collection of culinary recipes and cuisines from advocates and partner organizations around the globe. This collection of recipes culminated in the creation of an Inter(NASH)ional Recipe Book. This component of International NASH Day highlights the unique cuisines across various cultures and how they can contribute to healthy nutrition for the liver.
